Public Health Graduate Assistant

Kristen Haven is a Master of Public Health candidate in the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.  After being selected by the College as a Maternal and Child Health Scholar, she was invited to join Canyon Ranch Institute as a Public Health Graduate Assistant for the 2011-2012 academic year. Kristen is assisting the CRI team with research, curriculum design, and grant proposal projects related to the CRI Life Enhancement Programs. Canyon Ranch Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit public charity that catalyzes the possibility of optimal health for all people by translating the best practices of Canyon Ranch and our partners to help educate, inspire, and empower every person to prevent disease and choose a life of wellness.

Kristen earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, and a Master's in American Literature from the University of Arizona in Tucson. After working in the non-profit sector, teaching college writing, and building hiking trails, Kristen identified public health as the ideal intersection of her interests in culture, narrative, and education with her newly emerging goal to help people live healthier and fuller lives by focusing on prevention of chronic disease.

Kristen’s academic interests include healthy food access, built and natural environments, and adolescent health, as well as exploring interdisciplinary approaches to discourse, intervention, and prevention. After completing her M.P.H., Kristen plans to focus on health literacy as a means to help connect people in the most disparate social conditions to relevant and usable health information.

Kristen is passionate about spending time outdoors, hiking with her dog, mountain biking, trail running, camping, and enjoying potluck dinners and music with friends under the Tucson night sky.
