New program makes shopping for healthy foods easier today

As part of the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) in Sullivan County, MO, foods that are healthy selections are identified at Richardson’s Supermarket with shelf labels that read “Thumbs Up!” The program was created to encourage and support CRI LEP participants and other residents in shopping for whole foods, including some packaged and canned foods that do not contain artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, or unhealthy dietary fats. The Flu Season Is Upon Us

Obesity's Yearly Costs: $4,879 for a Woman, $2,646 for a Man

USA Today – September 21, 2010

CRI partner organization The George Washington University released a research report on the annual cost of being obese in the United States. The report goes beyond current research on the topic and takes into account everything from employee sick days and disability claims to the additional gallons of gasoline used to accommodate extra weight in automobiles. Christine C. Ferguson, J.D., director of the STOP Obesity Alliance and co-author of the report, comments about the discovery that while overweight women earn less than skinnier women, overweight men make the same amount as their healthy-weight counterparts. Experts Say Patients Are Focus in Future Health Care System

CRI Helping Local Residents on the Road to Future Better Health

The Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) offers residents of Sullivan County, MO, a unique opportunity to improve their health. Funded by a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health and supported by Health Literacy Missouri, the CRI LEP in Sullivan County aims to transfer the best practices of Canyon Ranch to Sullivan County to increase health literacy and to prevent, diagnose, and address chronic diseases through an integrative health model. The CRI LEP in Sullivan County is the first CRI LEP to focus on a rural population. The Milan Standard quotes Martha Gragg, a lifelong Milan resident and vice president for program at the Missouri Foundation For Health, as saying, "This is a tremendous opportunity for the Sullivan County community, the local trainers, and the 100 participants that will benefit from the project by making long lasting changes to improve their health."

Doctor's Dream Realized in S. Bronx

The school is the first career and technical education charter school in New York geared specifically toward preparing students for jobs in health care.
