CANYON RANCH INSTITUTE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JENNIFER CABE INVITES STATE LEGISLATORS TO MAKE CANCER PREVENTION AND SURVIVORSHIP A NATIONAL PRIORITY
Collaborative efforts and goals of the National Call to Action highlighted at the Women In Government Legislative Survivors' Summit
TUCSON, Ariz. (September 29, 2008) – Canyon Ranch Institute Executive Director Jennifer Cabe, M.A. was invited to speak at the first annual Legislative Survivors' Summit held in Washington, D.C. on September 26 and 27. Women In Government, a national, bipartisan organization of women state legislators, hosted “Breast Cancer Policy is Personal.” The summit brought together state lawmakers from around the nation as well as state representatives, cancer survivors, and public health advocates for the purpose of advancing cancer prevention, research, and treatment efforts across the United States. During her remarks, Ms. Cabe outlined the goals and strategies set forth in the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship.
“We can all play an important role in preventing cancer and improving the lives of the nearly 12 million cancer survivors in the United States,” said Ms. Cabe. “The National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship outlines four goals that all people can use to develop strategies to improve cancer prevention and survivorship. Through continued collaborative efforts, our nation will improve our approach to cancer. By taking steps to prevent cancer and improve quality of life after a cancer diagnosis, we can reduce the burden that cancer and other chronic diseases place on our country. Together, we can make cancer prevention and survivorship a national priority.
”Ms. Cabe encouraged the leaders at the summit to bring information to their communities and adopt strategies to improve cancer prevention and survivorship.
The National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship was developed through the leadership of the four most recent U.S. Surgeons General and collaborators from across the cancer community, including leaders in public health, science, government, and healthcare. The National Call to Action strives to empower all Americans to achieve optimal health and wellness throughout the cancer continuum, and charges all Americans across all sectors of society, from our highest levels of government and the private sector, to the individual person, to find the means and provide the stamina to elevate the war against cancer.
More information about how to become engaged and champion strategies to achieve the four goals outlined in the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship is available at www.NCTAcancer.org.
Outcomes of the Breast Cancer Policy is Personal: Legislative Survivors' Summit included strategies to: improve state tactics for breast cancer treatment and prevention; overcome socio–economic, racial, and cultural disparities that can be barriers to access to screening and treatment services; utilize survivorship in advocacy; and educate women and policymakers about breast cancer and the need for early detection.
