Partnerships › Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona

Childhood chronic disease has almost quadrupled over the past 40 years and rates of chronic disease continue to increase.¹ With childhood obesity levels on the rise, chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease pose a clear and immediate threat to children. In 2007, Canyon Ranch Institute and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) at the University of Arizona formed a partnership based on mutual interest in community-based public health research and intervention programs.

Background

MEZCOPH, Arizona's first and only accredited college of public health, was named after Canyon Ranch and Canyon Ranch Institute Founders Mel and Enid Zuckerman for their financial support to the College, vision and leadership in the profession and the community, and their commitment to the University of Arizona. Canyon Ranch Institute President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, is an alumnus and distinguished professor.

How We're Making a Difference

Healthy Steps for Families Program
Canyon Ranch Institute and MEZCOPH partnered to develop the Healthy Steps for Families program to help prevent chronic disease in children. The Healthy Steps for Families program aims to help parents become better role models for their children around issues related to health and wellness. This program influences children's behavior where it is first learned, in the home.
