October 4-10, 2009 — Tucson, AZ Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI) and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) joined with Canyon Ranch in Tucson, AZ to present the first-ever CRI LIVESTRONG Week October 4 through 10, 2009. One participant in the CRI LIVESTRONG Week activities — a cancer survivor — wrote in a comment, “What an incredible experience. It may well have saved my life and for that I am eternally grateful. BIG, BIG, thanks to the LIVESTRONG and Canyon Ranch Institute organizers and supporters.” During the week, Canyon Ranch guests and 12 CRI LIVESTRONG Fellows had the opportunity to attend more than 30 health and wellness activities and lectures that were particularly relevant to anyone interested in cancer prevention and survivorship. Among the offerings were 10 Steps to Prevent Cancer presented by Canyon Ranch Nutrition Director Lisa Powell, M.S., RD.; Ask the Right Questions, Eat the Right Food, Get the Best Care co-presented by Canyon Ranch physician Param Dedhia, M.D. and CRI Partnerships and Policies Director Christine L.Sardo, M.P.H., R.D.; and Optimizing Health for Cancer Prevention and Survivorship, a panel discussion led by CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th U.S. Surgeon General (2002-2006). Canyon Ranch guests who participated in CRI LIVESTRONG Week sessions quickly discerned the similarities between Canyon Ranch’s long-standing messages of integrative wellness and healthy choices and the recommendations made by Canyon Ranch presenters for improving cancer prevention and survivorship through healthy nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and other lifestyle-related topics. “This week has really empowered me to believe I can make it.”
- CRI LIVESTRONG Week Participant As part of the CRI LIVESTRONG Week, CRI and LAF also selected 12 CRI LIVESTRONG Fellows who participated in the week without charge. Some CRI LIVESTRONG Fellows were cancer survivors and others were focused on cancer prevention. Coming from six states, the Fellows ranged in age from 25 to 80 years young and provided detailed feedback about their experiences to help CRI, LAF, and Canyon Ranch better understand the potential for offering future programs that present cancer prevention and survivorship in the context of attaining optimal health and wellness.
